On Thursday, Feb. 5, U.S. Marshals searching for Joel Scott Wimbish, Jr., 44, on charges from the Statesville Police Department, discovered he was staying at a residence in Hildebran.
Following several hours of negotiation, officers using a drone found him dead inside the home.
Authorities had been searching for Wimbish in connection to five felony charges – attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Wimbish refused to exit the residence and was armed, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
The BCSO S.W.A.T. Team, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office STAR Team, a drone unit, and negotiation teams arrived at the scene. Officers used an armored vehicle from Catawba County to break open the front door before they piloted the drone inside to search.
Authorities contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death.
Sheriff Banks Hinceman said, “The BCSO is appreciative of the assistance provided by law enforcement partners.”
