Pictured (from left) are Patton girls tennis head coach Ryan Hyde, players London Berry, Madi Norman, Charlotte Wilson, Coley Berry, Kinley Acord, and Mahi Shah, and assistant coach Riley Berry. All six of the aforementioned players qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A West Regional individual tournament that begins on Friday at Belmont Abbey College, and they also participated in the 3A dual-team state playoffs this week as the 15th-seeded Lady Panthers (6-9) defeated 18th-seeded Mountain Heritage by an 8-1 score in Monday's opening round in Morganton before falling at second-seeded West Lincoln by a 7-2 final in the second round on Wednesday.
Other county squads to compete in the dual-team playoffs this week were as follows: 3A No. 6 seed Draughn (11-3), which was a 5-1 home winner over 11th-seeded Polk County in the second round after receiving a first-round bye; 4A No. 15 seed East Burke (8-9), which lost by a 5-1 score at second-seeded Burns in the second round after collecting a 5-4 home victory over 18th-seeded Maiden in the first round; and 6A No. 23 seed Freedom (0-11), which lost by a 6-0 final at 10th-seeded St. Stephens in the first round.Â
The dual-team playoffs will continue on Oct. 19, with Draughn visiting third-seeded Hendersonville in the third round of the 3A tournament and top-seeded NCSSM-Morganton (6-1) hosting fifth-seeded Clover Garden School in the second round of the 1A tournament, which only features four rounds due to having fewer teams than the other brackets.
