PICTURE BURKE PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Peter P. Mull Home

The Peter P. Mull Home, also known as the Mull-Hoyle House, is on Rhoney Road off N.C. 18, south of Morganton. Built about 1890, the two-story frame house features a shed-roof porch and a single-shouldered brick and stone chimney. Peter Presnell Mull (1830–1921) lived in the Rhoney Road area with his wife, Mary Emaline, and their seven children: Frances, Zero, Archibald, Barbara Alice, Peter Ewell, William Barto, and John Marion. Mary and their son, Peter Ewell, died of typhoid fever in May 1887. Mull subsequently married Martha J. Smith in 1888 and acquired land in Western Burke County on N.C. 126, where he established another farm. There, his son, John Marion Mull, operated the Whip-poor-will Dairy, one of Burke County’s notable dairies, now home to the Fonta Flora Brewery. This image was submitted by B. Rondal Mull to Picture Burke.
