Police chiefs in Glen Alpine, Valdese, and Drexel say rising competition with a smaller recruitment pool are forcing small-town departments to improve salaries, benefits, and training incentives to attract and retain officers.

The Drexel Board of Aldermen approved a $5.3 million budget that raises property taxes and utility rates to prioritize recreation, infrastructure, and public safety.

Like many towns throughout the country, Drexel's water infrastructure is aging. With most of the town's pipes older than 50 years, town leaders now have a 10-year plan to make the system more resilient.
