The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that it is investigating the death of a man arrested last Wednesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances.

When Tosha Lee Lewis, 36, of Hickory, was led into the courtroom on July 27 on her first set of conspiracy and murder charges, her contorted, crying face gave the impression of someone caught up in an unfortunate misunderstanding.

Three significant cases originating in Burke County saw developments in recent weeks: a murder charge was dismissed for lack of sufficient forensic evidence, a lawsuit against Burke County Public Schools was settled out of court, and a white-collar criminal case was delayed once again.

Although Burke County and several of the municipalities within it already have ordinances against public camping, advocates for the unsheltered say a proposed statewide homeless encampment ban would only strain a community that’s already struggling — should lawmakers override Gov. Josh Stein’s veto.

For tens of thousands of hours each year, people struggling with mental health and substance use problems fill UNC Health Blue Ridge’s emergency department. Now, Burke County is moving forward with plans for a 16-bed crisis center designed to ease that burden and provide an adequate alternative to the hospital and the jail.
