Train Derailment Update: Hwy. 70 closed for next 24 hrs at East Fleming/East Union intersection

UPDATE 5:10 P.M.

The City of Morganton reports that Norfolk Southern is now the lead agency on the derailment investigation. The cause of the derailment is still unknown and the investigation is active.

U.S. Hwy. 70 at the intersection of East Fleming Drive and East Union Street will be closed for about 24 hours for investigative purposes and cleanup.

From the City of Morganton:

Morganton Public Safety is handling an active scene involving the derailment of multiple train cars in Morganton.

One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Five rail cars overturned near the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and East Fleming Drive. No hazardous material spilled from this incident. No evacuation orders at this time. 

Traffic is being diverted at the intersection of Hwy. 70 and East Fleming Drive. 

Please avoid this area, which will be shut down for an extended amount of time.

Triple Community Fire Department reports that its Squad 1 is now covering Morganton Fire Station 3 while crews continue operations at the site of the derailment.
