A pair of North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics-Morganton students made quite an impression as volunteer interns for the Historic Burke Foundation, and foundation members offered their thanks for jobs well done Tuesday.
Seniors Aditi Kandukuri and Bryan Huang spent three hours every Tuesday during the 2023 fall and 2024 spring semesters as interns for the HBF, working at the History Museum of Burke County and the Historic Burke Courthouse.
The foundation honored the students with a reception at the Old Courthouse featuring a luncheon and cake.
Helping celebrate the students’ effort were foundation members Robert Patton, Claude Sitton, Phyllis Wogan, Wayne Hitt, Louis Asbury, and Terry Self. Becca Heacock did the decorating along with an assist from Debby Rex.
Both students said they enjoyed their internships.
“I gained a lot of experience I didn’t think I’d be able to gain working at the courthouse and the museum, and I got to complete a variety of different projects, ranging from scavenger hunts to most recently, the docent handbook,” said Kandukuri. “They were all very interesting to work on and we had a lot of amazing guidance.”
Huang echoed those sentiments.
“I’ve mostly been working on digitizing the rotating exhibit out there,” said Huang. “At the history museum, I’m working with Louis to video edit some of the veteran interviews, and working with their computer issues. I really enjoyed my time at the museum and courthouse.”
Both youngsters will graduate this spring as part of the school’s first graduating class. Kandukuri, originally from Charlotte, plans to attend the University of North Carolina, while Huang, from Greensboro, is headed to N.C. State.
Patton thanked both students for their work
“I’ve really enjoyed getting to know each of you,” said Patton. “Thank you for all the things you’ve done for both of our entities, the history museum and the courthouse.”
