When Table Rock Middle School finishes refurbishing its gym floor later this summer, visitors can expect a former educator’s name to be stained into one corner in memory of all the time and work she’s dedicated to the school.
The gym floor needs renovation due to water damage, and since the middle school needed a new floor anyway, it’s getting a bones-up makeover — sanding down, new urethane, and a new paint job.
Swan explained that a community member submitted a request that the gym floor be dedicated to Janet Greene, a former educator and coach at Table Rock with nearly 44 years of teaching under her belt at retirement.
Greene served as the athletic director at Table Rock and oversaw the booster club. She still substitutes.
Although the Board of Education had no problem with the dedication, the request prompted a discussion around who makes the call within a school, when it’s not the naming of an entire facility in question.
Board Chair Tiana Beachler led the discussion, suggesting that they leave it up to the school to determine.
Swan said that would fall in line with board policy 9300, which states that the superintendent works with the school and its family community to determine a name suggestion before bringing it to the board for approval.
While board member Sonya Rockett expressed concerns that there may be pushback, the board approved the dedication contingent on all complaints, if there are any, coming to the board instead of being directed at school officials.
