Appalachian State University has been ranked No. 1 on Forbes’ 2026 list of “America’s Best Employers for Veterans.”
The annual ranking recognizes employers for their workplace policies and programs for military veterans.
Forbes, working with market research firm Statista, surveyed more than 25,000 veterans employed by U.S. companies and organizations with more than 1,000 employees. The survey considered areas including veteran health benefits, career development opportunities, and veteran programs. The final list included 150 employers.
“Being recognized as the top employer for military veterans reflects the immense value our veteran faculty and staff bring to Appalachian State University every day,” said App State Chancellor Heather Norris. “Their leadership, resilience, and dedication enrich our academic community and elevate everything we do. We are deeply honored by their service, and App State remains steadfastly committed to supporting them in every phase of their professional journey.”
App State provides veteran employees and eligible spouses with programs that include hiring preferences, human resources assistance during career transitions, professional development opportunities, and tuition waivers.
The university’s Military Affairs Committee also works with military-affiliated students, faculty, and staff and advises university administrators on policies and programs affecting veterans, dependents, and other members of the military community.
App State also has received recognition for its services to military-affiliated students. U.S. News & World Report ranked the university No. 3 among Southern universities in its 2027 Best Colleges for Veterans category. Military Times ranked App State No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in North Carolina on its 2025 “Best for Vets: Colleges” list.
The university also has been designated a Military Friendly School by VIQTORY for 16 consecutive years.
