Freedom soccer slips past McDowell

Freedom’s Bryan Ramirez (right) runs toward the goal during Monday’s boys soccer match against McDowell in Morganton. Ramirez scored the only goal in the Patriots’ 1-0 win off an assist from Jameson Smith, while goalkeeper Jeler Jacobo-Ramirez recorded a shutout. The victory moved Freedom to 7-13-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Northwestern 6A/7A Conference play to end the regular season, and North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoff brackets were scheduled to be released on Thursday.
