Patton girls nab another WPC cross country title

The Patton girls cross country team won its second straight Western Piedmont 3A/4A Conference title on Tuesday at R-S Central, with Elise Sawdy (center) finishing first individually with a time of 19:50.88, Julia Niehoff (second from right) coming in third, and Nora Wykle (second from left) finishing fourth. Pictured with Sawdy, Niehoff, and Wykle are Panthers coaches Carl Schilkowsky (far left) and Whitney Collins (far right). In addition to the performances by the aforementioned trio, others contributing to the Patton girls’ team score were Evelyn McGuire (22nd) and Anna Aiken (25th), while Beckham Welch (21st) was the only male competitor for the Panthers. Meanwhile, East Burke — which finished third out of five squads on the girls’ side, but like Patton didn’t have enough boys to qualify for a team score — was led by a sixth-place finish from Eduardo Valencia Soria (boys), a 10th-place finish from Gracie Kaylor (girls), a 12th-place finish from Aubrey Sanders (12th), and a 13th-place finish from Conner Kerley (13th), and top-15 finishers for Draughn were Adelei Morrow (sixth) and Adaleigh Wilder (15th) in the girls’ race. As for Freedom, its boys took second out of six teams and its girls took third during the Northwestern 6A/7A Conference championship meet on Tuesday at Southside Park in Newton. Top individual performers for the Patriots included Frank Harrelson (sixth in boys), William Russ (ninth in boys), Nick Chiota (10th in boys), and Ashlyn Davis (18th in girls). Next up will be North Carolina High School Athletic Association West Regional championship meets Oct. 30-31 at various sites across the state.
