Tim Rooks sworn in as Superior Court Judge

Morganton’s Timothy J. Rooks was sworn in as the N.C. Superior Court Judge for District 36 on Friday, celebrating the occasion among friends, family, fellow lawyers, and judges.

According to Former N.C. Superior Court Judge Robert Ervin, Rooks spent more than 30 years as an attorney. Gov. Josh Stein appointed Rooks to fill the shoes of Ervin, who retired in August.

Before a brief prayer, Pastor George Logan explained that he has known Rooks for years and said, “He’s a man that’s extremely authentic and genuine to the core … He’s always been the same, from the time I met him until now.”

Ervin also spoke, offering several humorous tips on being a pro at the job. These included being patient, being equal and fair, remembering that the judge doesn’t know everything, and remembering that nobody builds statues to court personnel who work late — so keep schedules brief when possible.

Mostly, he reminded Rooks that everyone is human by reiterating to keep his cool and not to “lose your temper unless you planned to in advance.”

Finally, Rooks took his oath, supported by his wife, Jeri. Following the swearing-in, Rooks thanked his family, praising his father’s police work and his children’s integrity while the courtroom sniffled and cried.

Before his wife assisted him with putting on his robe, Rooks said, “The why we do it — it’s the same for all of us. We want to help people … My job is changing, but the ‘why’ remains the same.”

Elections for the Superior Court position will be back up for grabs in 2026.
