Branton’s Landing, near Canal Bridge on Lake James, was started by two brothers and their wives — Jasper David “J.D.” Branton and his wife, Maude, and Richard Harold “Dick” Branton and his wife, Mabel. It was a convenient place to stop for fishing and boating supplies, milk, ice cream, Coca-Colas, etc. Lake visitors often told stories and consulted with the Brantons about lake and fishing conditions. In June 1953, there was a popular story being told about a hammerhead shark allegedly caught at the lake, which J.D. Branton said was “a real tall tale worthy of being entered in any contest.” The Brantons operated the business until 1965.
