A broken pipe caused 5,000 gallons of raw sewage to spill into Double Branch Creek in Valdese on July 2.
The town gave a statement about two hours after the 10 a.m. spill to inform residents of the incident.
Valdese’s statement said a contractor broke a pipe during Hurricane Helene cleanup efforts, which resulted in the spill.
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Resources division was immediately notified.
NC General Statute 143-215.1C requires operators of wastewater collection or treatment to write a press release when 1,000 or more gallons of untreated wastewater is discharged.
Residents seeking more information are encouraged to contact Valdese Public Works Director Allen Hudson at 828-874-6779.
Citizens can be assured that if the Valdese Town Council had been informed of that damage 18 months ago, it would have been repaired. Before a sewage spill and with the cost borne by the contractor.
