Does Rep. Blackwell believe in democracy?

TO THE EDITOR:

I was disappointed to read the comments by Rep. Hugh Blackwell, in the Oct. 25 edition of The Paper.

He said the reason why the North Carolina congressional maps were redrawn was to help ensure the addition of a Republican leaning district and the disappearance of a Democratic leaning district and this was to increase the Republican majority in Congress.

He further stated the reason was to “help avoid divided government in Washington.” He went on to state “In my opinion, voters will be better off if both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate can work with President Trump.

I was surprised to hear a politician admit he did not believe in divided government. Well, Democracy survives on divided government.

Authoritarian governments survive on one-party rule. I realize he wants his party to be the ruling party so the Senate, the House, and the President can ignore anyone from any opposing party.

You can be sure he would not believe in one-party control of government if the Democrats had the majority in the House, Senate, and Presidency so they could ignore any Republican ideas.

He is ignoring half the population or more of the United States. I know he blames the Democrats for starting the redistricting race now. Has he forgotten that Texas started the early redistricting after Trump told them he wanted it done?

Let’s put the blame where it belongs based on the facts.

Didn’t he take an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the N.C. Constitution?

Don’t you think that his party has an obligation to the other half of the population?

Aren’t all representatives obligated to represent ALL the people? It is called compromise.

I love my county but am ashamed of how the current administration is treating the hard-working poor in this country. Don’t wealthy people have an obligation to contribute to society to help the less fortunate?

How did the top 10% or 20% get to be so well off compared to the other 80%?

Show me a successful company and I will show you their product that is made, or used, and paid for, by the rest of the population.

How about helping the less rich with medical care and not giving the rich a healthy tax cut.

Republicans need to compromise in health care and other issues and not gerrymander the voting districts to have total control of the government.

If I have misunderstood his statements of a one-party control of our government, he can write the editor of this paper and explain what he really meant to say.

Does he believe in fair representation of all people of North Carolina and support a two-party government?
