The Belle at Avery, a well-known Airbnb in downtown Morganton, has closed its doors and is under contract to become home to a new family.
The Airbnb, operated and owned by Samantha Reid, is at 404 Avery Ave. in a 1890s fully restored historic home, which combines Colonial Revival and Victorian era design elements. The property was formerly a school and a bed and breakfast, according to Morganton’s Main Street website.
“It has been an absolute joy and privilege to serve Burke County through The Belle at Avery Airbnb over the past 10 years. My guests from all over the country and beyond have added to the story of this special place,” Reid said.
Reid said the business officially closed on Monday, with the closing date for the home’s sale set for June 27. Reid said she knows the news will disappoint some of her past guests, but that the home is going to a “fabulous” family with young children.
“I’m deeply grateful for the glowing write-ups in The Paper and The News Herald, and for the steadfast support from the City of Morganton, the Burke County Chamber of Commerce, and Burke County Tourism,” Reid said. “I’ve learned so much along the way and have been truly enriched by the incredible people I’ve had the pleasure to meet.”
Burke County property records show that Reid has owned the home since November 2014 and has a taxable value of $425,665. According to the listing with Engel & Völkers, the asking price for the property was $760,000. The home’s bottom level includes a living room, dining room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a family room, and a large two-room kitchen. The second floor includes three bedrooms — the old Lafayette Suite, the Three Sisters Suite, and the Briscoe Room — with a private bathroom for each. The total living area, according to property records, is 3,933 square feet.
The Belle at Avery was also a regular participant in Play Music on the Porch Day, which is a worldwide movement to get people outside and connected with their community through music. Most recently, Sami, Steve & Smith performed popular jazz and pop favorites in the 2024 event.
“While my story remains unwritten, there is excitement in the air for my journey ahead,” Reid said.
