Turnout for the Nov. 4 municipal elections was anemic, but those who cast ballots chose both new and familiar faces.
VALDESE
Among the most hotly contested races in Burke County was in Valdese, where a slate of candidates campaigning under the Step Up for Valdese umbrella swept their council seats and came out on top for mayor.
Keith Huffman bested Sandi Walker for Valdese mayor, 77.39% to 22.61%. The town council races are as follows:Â
Ward 1: Shannon Radabaugh (65.81%); Ron Blancaflor (33.98%)
Ward 2: Melinda Zimmerman (98.19%); uncontested
Ward 3: Rexanna Lowman (70.96%); William (Rick) McClurd (28.94%)
GLEN ALPINE
On the west end of the county in Glen Alpine, residents voted into office a new mayor. Two of the three aldermen elected are incumbents.Â
The town's mayor will be William Kevin Herron, earning 90.45% of the vote. He faced no challenger. The aldermen races were much tighter. The top three vote-getters will be sworn is as aldermen:Â

Jason Miller (20.67%
Sheila Perkins (14.76%)
Lucas Huffman (14.57%)
Michelle Lewis (12.60%)
Jody Lewis (8.27%)
Synthia Adams (6.69%)
DREXEL
Dennis Anthony ran unopposed for mayor of Drexel, garnering 88.89% of the vote. The two candidates receiving the most votes will be seated on the Drexel Board:
David Harmon (31%)
Scott Coe (26.57%)
Victoria Taylor ( 21.77%)
Brad Ritch (20.30%)
Jennifer Yount was elected (95.59%) to fill the unexpired term of her late father.
MORGANTON
In the county seat, Morganton voters return Wendy Cato to City Council for District 4. Newcomer Molly McKay will now represent District. 3. Both ran unopposed.
ELECTION RESULTS
Despite nearly two weeks of early voting opportunity and a warm, cloudless Election Day, voter turnout was a mere 12.22% across the county. Of the more than 18,000 registered voters, only 2,226 cast a ballot.
