BCPS / FOR THE PAPER
Winners were joined at the science fair by BCPS Superintendent Mike Swan and school board members Leslie Taylor, Jamey Wycoff, Sonya Rockett, and Brad Camp.
Burke County Public Schools (BCPS) held its annual Middle School Science Fair at Liberty Middle School on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Bailey Heape of Table Rock Middle School claimed first place, followed by Charlotte Revilla, also from Table Rock, in second, and Gabby Fisher from Liberty Middle in third.
Heape’s project focused on plants growing in hydrogels, often used in biomedical applications; Revilla explored the growth of microgreens, plants harvested soon after sprouting; and Fisher researched duckweed, a flowering aquatic plant.
The top two winners, Heape and Revilla, will move on to the Regional Science Fair at Watauga High School on Saturday, Feb. 8.
District leaders commended the participants for their creative and innovative projects, which required the use of the scientific method and included an interview process.
Continental sponsors the event each year.
