Burke students invited to apply for 10-month John M. Belk Impact Fellowship program

North Carolina college students, including those attending Western Piedmont Community College and other institutions serving Burke County, are invited to apply for a paid fellowship focused on education and social impact.

The John M. Belk Impact Fellowship is a 10-month, paid program running from August through May that offers hands-on experience for students currently enrolled in a North Carolina community college, undergraduate or graduate program.

The fellowship builds on the John M. Belk Scholarship program and is designed to prepare students interested in advancing educational opportunity across the state. Organizers say the program is rooted in the belief that talent is universal, but opportunity is not.

Fellows are placed with host organizations that play key roles in North Carolina’s education landscape, including nonprofits, education systems and philanthropic institutions. Participants work 11-20 hours per week with their host site.

In addition to day-to-day project work, fellows attend monthly virtual Fireside Chat sessions, participate in biweekly check-ins with the fellowship coordinator and weekly meetings with their host site supervisor. The program also includes in-person orientation and networking opportunities.

Assignments may include research across the education continuum, communications and social media management, and preparation of policy briefs, legislative reports and other materials.

Applications are open through March 20, at 11:59 p.m., and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
