Learn the art of laughter: Morganton Improv launches six-week comedy workshop

If you’ve ever pictured yourself doing stand-up comedy at a nightclub or joining the cast of the improvisation show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” you may want to make room on your calendar for the next six Saturdays.

Morganton Improv will offer a series of improvisational classes taught in a way they say anyone can learn. The meetings will begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, from 4-5:30 p.m. upstairs at Morganton General Store (enter from the rear of the building).

According to Morganton Improv Coach Chet Wagner, during this course, participants will learn agreement technique, often referred to as “Yes, and,” as well as listening technique and teamwork.

“By the end, students will know several improv games and the base fundamentals of improv,” Wagner stated.

Participants must be at least 18 years old. The cost of the six-week series is $100. Those interested can simply show up for the first class, or they may message Morganton Improv by clicking “Going” on the organization’s Facebook page (facebook.com/morgantonimprov).

According to Wagner, Morganton Improv has been practicing and performing locally for about six years.

“This is growing from that,” he said, of the classes, “offering a chance for more people to explore the art of improv.”

He explained there are opportunities for classes in Asheville and Charlotte, but not many local options.

“Those classes also tend to be at higher price points,” Wagner explained. “I started improv classes in 2006 at Charleston's (S.C.) Theatre 99, and then performed there for 10 years before moving here.

“Those classes were amazingly fun, and I made numerous friends who enjoy the arts. I hope to grow that environment here,” Wagner added.

Morganton General Store is located at 116 W. Union St., in Morganton. The back of the building where participants will enter for classes, can be accessed from a parking lot off of King Street, beside the Morganton Community House.
