Cavaliers double up Winston-Salem Prep

East Burke quarterback Carter Bennett, shown here getting ready to air out a deep pass in a file photo from Sept. 4, completed 3 of 5 passes for 32 yards — including a touchdown pass to Cash Oyola (two catches, 22 yards) — to go with six carries for 48 yards and a score in the Cavaliers’ 36-18 home win over Winston-Salem Prep during a varsity football game on Sept. 11. Malachi Bennett (25 carries, 182 yards, three TDs) and RJ Williams (two catches, 20 yards) were other leading contributors for EB, while Oyola also had six carries for 31 yards and a 10-yard completion to Williams. OTHER RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK: Freedom suffered its first loss of the season against T.C. Roberson on Sept. 11 in Morganton, although Ryder Huffman sandwiched touchdown passes of 35 and 25 yards to Noah Francis around a 15-yard interception return for a score from Zaydrin Hausley in the opening half. The Patriots also scored on the final play of the game when Eboo Thomas hauled in a 10-yard TD reception. Draughn and Patton both lost via shutout last week, with the Wildcats falling by a 43-0 final at Mountain Island Charter on Sept. 11 and the Panthers losing by a 45-0 score at Polk County on Sept. 10. Bryson Seagle (17 carries, 51 yards; four catches, 37 yards; five kickoff returns, 166 yards), Fore Putnam (6-of-16 passing, 43 yards), and Carson Murdock (26-yard reception) were among Draughn’s top offensive performers, while Patton was held to 27 yards of total offense but did get five carries for 17 yards from quarterback Trenton Kidd. WEEK 5 GAMES: East Burke (2-2) visited Patton (0-4) in both teams’ Western Piedmont 3A/4A Conference opener late Friday, while Freedom (3-1) traveled to A.C. Reynolds for its final nonconference game and Draughn (0-4) hosted R-S Central in another WPC opener. See the Sept. 26 edition of The Paper for details from the games played on Sept. 18.
