Veterans in Burke County facing serious illness or end-of-life care can receive specialized support from AMOREM, the nonprofit hospice and palliative medicine provider that is recognizing military service as Veterans Day approaches.
AMOREM, which grew from the merger of Burke Hospice and Palliative Care and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in 2021, provides services across 12 western North Carolina counties. Its veteran support program addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of former military personnel while helping their families navigate serious illness.
A central part of that effort is the organization’s Veterans Honoring Veterans program, which connects veterans receiving hospice care with volunteers who have also served in the military.
The approach recognizes that military experiences can influence how veterans respond to illness, medical treatment, and end-of-life decisions. Fellow veterans may share experiences and an understanding of military service that can help patients feel more comfortable discussing their needs.
AMOREM said its hospice and palliative care teams receive training to recognize the experiences and needs of veterans. The organization develops individualized care plans and conducts recognition ceremonies honoring patients’ military service.
“We are deeply grateful to the men and women who have served our country,” said AMOREM CEO April L. Moore. “At AMOREM, it is our privilege to express that gratitude by providing care that honors their experiences, respects their wishes, and supports the people they love.”
AMOREM encourages residents to learn about veterans’ experiences through its Veterans Voices podcast series, available on the organization’s YouTube channel. The recordings provide opportunities to hear firsthand accounts of military service and personal experiences.
As part of its Veterans Day observance, AMOREM is seeking veterans interested in volunteering to support other former service members receiving hospice care.
