Live burn offers real-world training

Morganton Public Safety’s firefighters have refreshed their extinguishing skills after a live-burn training.

The location for the first live burn took place at 1204 E. Union St. in Morganton on Tuesday, April 8, followed by a second live-burn training at 1208 E. Union St. on Tuesday, April 15.

The department provides these trainings so firefighters can practice ventilation techniques, search and rescue, suppression, and experience a live burn.

Fire Division Chief Israel Gibson said, “This is a realistic training that helps to enhance skill sets of our firefighters in a real-world setting. While being realistic, it also has to be safe. We want this training to be valuable and to be valuable it has to be safe.

“I think in preparing our firefighters today, there is no better scenario than getting an acquired structure. The realism it provides is vital in training and preparing our firefighters to help our community when they are in need.”
