Burke County’s business formation slowed in March but remains ahead of last year’s pace, continuing a strong start to 2026.
North Carolina Secretary of State records show 46 new business entities were registered in Burke County in March 2026, down from 58 in February and 64 in January. Despite the month-to-month dip, the county has recorded 168 new business registrations through the first quarter of 2026, compared with approximately 160 during the same period in 2025, based on state filing data.
Limited liability companies continued to dominate March filings. Thirty-eight of the 46 new entities were LLCs, maintaining the clear preference among small business owners for that structure. The remaining filings included four business corporations, two professional limited liability companies, and two nonprofit organizations. North Carolina requires most business entities to register with the Secretary of State before operating.
Morganton again led all municipalities, accounting for 30 of March’s registrations. Connelly Springs followed with six, while Hildebran and Valdese posted smaller totals. A handful of businesses listed Glen Alpine or Burke County addresses tied to Hickory postal routes, continuing a familiar geographic pattern centered on the county’s primary population hubs.
The mix of new businesses in March reflected ongoing trends seen throughout the quarter. Construction, repair, and home service businesses remained a leading category, including general contractors, specialty trades and maintenance services. That sector has consistently represented one of the largest shares of new filings, tied to continued demand for housing and property upkeep.
Real estate and property-related companies also appeared frequently, including investment and property holding entities. The continued presence of these filings points to sustained activity in residential and small-scale commercial property markets.
March filings also included a range of professional and personal services, from consulting and creative work to personal care. A smaller number of food-related and retail ventures were registered, along with a limited number of nonprofit organizations.
Business registrations do not guarantee physical openings or employment, but they can signal entrepreneurial activity and economic sentiment.
Burke County closed 2025 with 633 total new business registrations, up from 512 in 2024. Through the first three months of 2026, the county remains slightly ahead of last year’s pace, suggesting continued strength in locally driven, service-based businesses that anchor the local economy.
