PICTURE BURKE PHOTO OF THE WEEK

The 1929 Rutherford College Ramblers football team is pictured in front of ‘Old Main,’ the institution’s primary administration building. The school originated as a private academy founded in 1853 by R. L. Abernethy. By 1871, the surrounding community of Excelsior had adopted the name Rutherford College. The college operated for decades as a Methodist-supported institution in Burke County, serving students from across Western North Carolina. During the early 1930s, amid the financial pressures of the Great Depression, Rutherford College closed and merged with Brevard College in 1933. The names of the players in this photograph are not known. The History Museum of Burke County and the NC Room (John T. Oxford Jr.’s Walt Greene Collection) provided this image to Picture Burke. The Town of Rutherford College is celebrating Founders Day on May 16 this year.
