Nearly 1,200 people attended the dedication ceremony of the new Grace Hospital at 2201 S. Sterling St. on May 10, 1973. The first Grace Hospital opened in 1906, founded by Grace Episcopal Church. The new $6.7 million facility replaced the old hospital on College Street, built in 1929. Donnell VanNoppen, a member of the board of trustees and one of the principals in the fundraising drives, is shown as master of ceremonies. Mrs. E. P. Bounous, president of the board of trustees welcomed the large crowd. J. Grayson Brothers, Grace Hospital administrator, told the history of the hospital. Sherrod Salsbury Jr., a long-time trustee, who was chairman of the building committee, also spoke. Dr. W. Reece Berryhill, dean emeritus of the UNC School of Medicine, was the principal speaker. Blue Ridge HealthCare provided this image to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.
