There are three critical issues between the lines of this story. First, the elected Valdese "leaders" were presented and silently accepted a solely staff-developed budget. Second, the $700,000 salary budget increase resulted from a "fire-aim-ready" compensation study that omitted the critical position evaluation and grading review that reliable compensation studies include. Third, having the best-trained and best-paid public safety employees is an essential quality-of-life factor for residents and prospective residents, as well as for job-creating businesses. Yet having the greatest public safety facility in several surrounding counties will not improve public safety. At the same time, the highest property tax rate in the area virtually ensures financial disaster, if not a ghost-town future.
