Tryon Advisors also said, the annual payments on a $10 million loan will be equivalent to another 17 cents ad valorem property taxes, e.g., 41.5 + 13 + 17 =71.5. The highest in western NC, for the grandest public safety building in western NC.

In 2024, the council approved the police chief’s recommendation to purchase a building on Main Street that the police “could move right into.” The facilities review committee, with 150 years of construction and facilities experience, concurred, recommending $1 million renovations to bring the building to current standards. Total cost would have been $1.5 million which the town had set aside. Alas, when it came time for the council to approve it, the chief made a 45-minute presentation to convince three of four council members to throw that plan and committee under the bus. Suddenly, nothing less than the new police station in wealthy Maiden would do.

Worse, anyone who knows anything about commercial construction knows the 2-level, 25,000 SF building the town council approved without even requesting an estimate, will cost millions more than $10 million.
