The defending bullseye and 3D state champion East Burke Middle School archery team opened its 2024-25 season with a win at the Turkey Shoot 10-meter season warmup tournament hosted by Startown Elementary School in Newton, while Drexel won the elementary school division.
The land-based event was held Nov. 7-11, with the majority of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The EBMS No. 1 team scored 3,371 points to top the 10-team middle school field, which also included fourth-place Heritage, fifth-place Table Rock, and the sixth-place Raiders’ No. 2 squad. The Wolverines (3,017) were the only Burke County elementary school in the seven-school field and won by more than 100 points.
EBMS was led by overall individual champion Logan Berry (296; 26 10s), a sixth grader who bested 209 other participants including those in the high school division to take the title. The Raiders had seven other archers score at least 280 including eighth grader Mary Dellinger (288), who was middle school and overall girls champion.
The Raiders’ Aubree Garris scored 285, Marshall Withers had 284, Benjamin Chapman and Luke Duncan both had 283, seventh-grade girls champion Maggie Mace had 282, academic archer Brielle Hubler had 280, and seventh-grade boys champion Joshua Whitesides posted a score of 278.
Heritage was led by eighth-grade boys winner Rammelio Sevcik (286) and sixth-place girls first-place finisher Viollet Sevcik (277), while Table Rock’s top archers were eighth graders Kaylin Norman (272) and Simon Hefner (270).
Drexel fifth grader Jacob Loden (275; 12 10s) was overall elementary champion, finishing just ahead of Wolverines teammate and runner-up Eli Warr (271). Drexel’s Zeke Bean and Nathan Swearingen also scored 265-plus points, and Dawson Poteat and London Murray were fourth-grade boys and girls champs, respectively.
