FOR THE PAPERAs the 2024-25 school year came to a close, Burke County’s New Dimensions Charter School hosted two events designed to entertain and inform students.
Michael Reno Harrell, an award-winning songwriter, a published author, a nationally known storyteller, and a visual artist from the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina (and columnist for The Paper), entertained students in May.
Harrell, who has traveled to 44 states and several foreign countries, shared stories and songs about his life. School officials said students, parents, and teachers were captivated by his tales and tunes.
Harrell has earned praise from not only the music community, but from the literary and storytelling worlds as well. He has been a Featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival and Teller In Residence at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tenn. He has also performed at music events such as MerleFest and the Walnut Valley Festival.
New Dimensions Charter School held its first Career Fair on May 20, which allowed middle school students to explore different job prospects. The event offered guidance, hands-on experiences, and opportunities for youngsters to interview the guests and get first-hand information on different careers.
