The First Baptist Church of Morganton originated in 1879. Its first church building on North Sterling Street was destroyed by fire. The second structure was built of brick on the corner of Meeting and South King streets in 1895. In 1917, an Estey pipe organ, pictured above, was installed with funds from the late philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. This image shows a grouping of the First Baptist Church choirs: Church Choir, Chapel/Young People’s Choir, Ambassador Choir (boys aged 9-12), Carol Choir (girls aged 9-12) and Cherub Choir (ages 6-8). The Rev. John D. McCready served as the pastor when this image was made in May of 1952. Mrs. Beryl S. Wiltshire was the Minister of Music, and the organist was Mrs. Janette Walker. The History Museum of Burke County and the N.C. Room (John T. Oxford Jr.’s Walt Greene Collection) provided this image created by Greene Studio to Picture Burke.
