The Rev. Joseph Donnas Edward Smith (1893–1972) and Alberta “Berter” Lou Burgess Smith (1898–1979). Both natives of Caldwell County, the couple made their home for many years on Bouchelle Street in Morganton. The Rev. Smith, son of Donnas and Mary Wakefield Smith, was a minister within the Western North Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. They were active members of Gaston Chapel AME Church, where she was president of the Ocean Wave Club. She retired from the Steele Rulane and Piedmont Gas Company in Morganton. Together, they raised a large family, including six sons, Johnny, Charles, Alexander, Clifford, Edward, and George; and five daughters, Effie Mae, Luberta, Elizabeth, Helen, and Frances. The couple are buried at Olive Hill Cemetery. This image was submitted by Luberta Smith Lambert to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.
