Just four months after she moved into her office on the second floor of Valdese’s Old Rock School, Melanie Cornelison-Jannotta resigned her position as executive director of the Old Colony Players (OCP). The organization selected Cornelison-Jannotta in March after a four-month search following the resignation of Edyth Potter, who had served as director for six years.
On her social media page, Cornelison-Jannotta announced Sunday, Aug. 3, that she has accepted a position as artistic director at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy, a role she had held in the past.
“Most of you know that I was the Artistic Director for the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy for quite awhile,” Cornelison-Jannotta said. “I always felt in my heart that someday I would be back in Mount Airy. I’m thrilled to say the time is now!"
Cornelison-Jannotta’s departure leaves the Valdese community theater without a leader, just as its fall and winter theater season begins. Morrissa Angi, treasurer of OCP’s board of directors, said Cornelison-Jannotta’s departure dealt a blow to the organization.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are truly disheartened at the resignation of the executive director,” Angi stated. “We wish her nothing but the best with her future endeavours.”
Angi said as the Old Colony Players finish the summer’s run of “From This Day Forward” this weekend, they look forward to opening the next chapter for the organization.
