PICTURE BURKE PHOTO OF THE WEEK

On Aug. 7, 1979, four men met to finalize the sale of the Morganton newspaper, The News-Herald. After the death of the long-time editor and publisher of The News-Herald, Beatrice Cobb, in 1959, the newspaper was placed in a trust that governed its ownership until its sale in 1979. At that time, The News-Herald had a circulation of 11,700. Pictured (from left) are Stanley Moore, editor; Roy H. Park, buyer; U.S. Sen. Samuel J. Ervin Jr., acting as attorney for the transaction; and J.D. Fitz, publisher. Park, a Surry County native living in Ithaca, N.Y., owned newspapers and broadcast stations in 15 states, including 11 daily papers, five Sunday editions, and 18 weeklies, along with 21 broadcast outlets. This image was submitted by Scott Whisnant to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.
