Digital Literacy for Seniors class offered at Morganton Public Library

The Western Piedmont Council of Governments Planning and Transportation Department is offering monthly Digital Literacy for Seniors classes at the Morganton Public Library.

Join us Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. for Cloud Storage Basics. Learn the basics of cloud storage – a technology that lets you store documents, images, and other media files remotely while giving you greater accessibility, reliability, and protection for your important data.

We’ll discuss what cloud storage is, why it’s the future of data storage, and consider a few of the most popular services currently available to consumers. No pre-registration is required, and the class is free of charge.

Adult Programming

The Educational Lunch Series, presented by Partners, will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Morganton Public Library. This month’s topic is “Understanding Depression.”

This program is for adults only, and no registration is required to attend. CEU’s are available. Bottled water and snacks are provided, or bring your lunch.

Join us for Crochet Café on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Valdese Public Library. This is a new program for teens and adults to hang out and crochet. Pre-registration is not required to attend. For more information, please call Danielle at 828-764-9269.

Young Adult Programming

Spaces are now open to teens who are interested in serving on our Young Adult Advisory Board!

Teens who serve on this board provide valuable input and guidance on teen programming and outreach initiatives, gain volunteer hours for participation, and have exclusive access to behind-the-scenes activities.

Adults and teens alike are welcome to this month’s Crochet Cafe on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Valdese Public Library.

YAS will wrap up the week Saturday, Aug. 16, at the C.B. Hildebrand Public Library with a Craft Closet Cleanout. This program will be a drop-in program available all day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Children’s Programming

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Summer Reading Program this year. So much fun was had by staff and patrons alike. Guess what? The excitement continues throughout the year as well!

If you have prizes to pick up, please do that by the end of the day on Saturday, Aug. 9. After this date, we will be cleaning up and putting things away.

Our storytime groups will resume meeting the week of Aug. 18, and registration for these groups opened Tuesday, Aug. 5. We offer weekly storytime groups for children from birth through 5th grade at each of our locations.

Join us for Geology Rocks at the Valdese Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m. and explore our world below the surface There will be hands-on rock identification and cracking your own geodes. Children are even invited to bring their own rock collections to show if they have one. No pre-registration is required. Geology Rocks is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Help us clean out our craft closet Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Morganton Public Library. Drop in any time between 2 and 4 p.m. and beat the heat while enjoying some leftover crafts and projects.

Children should have parent assistance and supervision due to the variety and wide range of crafts that will be available. No pre-registration is required and materials are available while they last.

Rising kindergarteners are invited to Camp Kindergarten at the Morganton Public Library on Friday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. Your rising kindergartener will learn skills necessary to thrive in a classroom environment while earning prizes along the way. This program is open to children beginning kindergarten this fall, and pre-registration is required.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed at the Morganton Public Library to assist with landscape maintenance. We need some folks to help us keep our landscaped areas free of weeds and debris. If you would like to help call Library Director Jim Wilson at 764-9276 or email at jwilson@bcpls.org.

eBooks @ your library

Nearly 6,000 Burke County Public Library users have registered to use the library’s digital collection available through the e-iNC consortium and NC Kids Digital Library.

This digital collection includes eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming video available to Burke County Public Library cardholders. Apps are available for download for a variety of devices including Kindle, iPhone, and Android phones.
