Burke County residents can now apply for home energy efficiency rebates through the new Energy Saver North Carolina program. The initiative is aimed at helping low- to moderate-income households lower utility bills, improve comfort, and cut emissions.
“Energy Saver NC will help Burke County families who need it most save money on utility bills, make their homes healthier and more comfortable, reduce emissions and improve air quality,” said DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson.
The program, launched in January by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, includes more than $208 million in federally funded rebates. North Carolina is the first state in the nation to roll out both rebate programs at once:
HOMES (Homeowners Managing Efficiency Savings): Up to $16,000 for home efficiency improvements such as insulation, air sealing, and energy-efficient HVAC systems.
HEAR (Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates): Up to $14,000 for high-efficiency electric appliances like heat pump water heaters and electric stoves.
Eligibility depends on household income and projected energy savings. In Burke County, a four-person household earning up to $62,100 may qualify for the full rebate. Moderate-income households earning up to 150 percent of area median income may also qualify at lower rebate levels. Both homeowners and tenants, with owner permission, are eligible.
The program begins with single-family homes, especially in storm-impacted and high energy-burdened communities.
How it works:
Applicants confirm income eligibility.
For HOMES rebates, a free energy assessment identifies upgrades.
Work must be completed by an Energy Saver NC–approved contractor.
Contractors apply rebates directly to project costs, then complete the work once approved.
Energy Saver NC also aims to boost local business by partnering with licensed contractors, creating jobs tied directly to home improvements in Burke County.
How to apply:
Residents may apply online, by email, phone, or mail. Assistance is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., at 866-998-8555. Details and applications are available at energysavernc.org.
