Those who went to Burke United Christian Ministries for lunch on Thursday, July 30, were greeted by a group of smiling college students, all donning purple, #TruistTogether T-shirts.
The students are summer interns at Truist Bank, based in Charlotte. They came to work for BUCM as part of their Western North Carolina recovery efforts for National Internship Day.
“They’re basically handling the things we don’t have time for,” said Alice Horton, the director of BUCM.
The organization has been in full swing since moving to its current building in November 2025. Their busyness means a lot of mouths are getting fed, but some of the upkeep gets set on the backburner.
With over 100 service-driven interns ready to help, Horton and her team were excited for the upkeep that would be accomplished.
The interns were divided into five groups, each responsible for a crucial departmental need of the BUCM.
“We’re definitely feeling Truist Together,” said Isha Basak, a Truist intern, referencing her shirt as she wiped the thrift store windows down.
Some were responsible for landscaping, trimming shrubs, and breaking roots. A few could be seen washing windows, scrubbing tables, and cleaning carpets. Still others were organizing the ministry’s in-house thrift store or forming old-fashioned assembly lines to pack hygiene and snack bags.
While only there for a day, the group was able to satisfy a number of needs, adding to the efficiency of the ministry.
