Former Major League Baseball pitcher Madison Bumgarner was born in Hickory on Aug. 1, 1989, and grew up in Caldwell County, graduating from South Caldwell High School in 2007. Bumgarner was a three-time World Series champion with the San Francisco Giants, and he was also the MVP of the National League Championship Series and the World Series in 2014, a four-time All-Star, and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner who was perennially one of the game’s top hitting pitchers. Bumgarner ultimately played 15 MLB seasons from 2009-2023, spending 11 years with the Giants before completing his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
