Steve Jetter and Daniel Honeycutt both made it consecutive years with wins at Silver Creek Golf Club as the duo teamed up to claim the title at the club’s sixth annual Bubba tournament on April 11-12.
Jetter, last year’s Masters Par 3 tournament champ who also claimed the Burke County Open in 2024, and Honeycutt, who was part of the 2025 Bubba title duo after placing second the year before, finished the two-day event at 29-under par to win the first flight by two strokes over Cecil Whitmire and Aaron Vanderpool.
Jetter and Honeycutt opened with a 17-under round of 55, the low round of the event, in which teams played captain’s choice and also got one mulligan on each shot after the tee shot.
Lane Rosenfield and Neal Kepner (21-under) edged Justin and Jon Spencer by one shot to capture the second flight, while Jim Coleman and Keith Ryan (15-under) won the third flight and Dee Harmon and Tim Vess (11-under) won the fourth flight.
Silver Creek also hosted 54 golfers in its Masters Par 3 tournament on April 8, with Robert Buckner claiming the title with a nine-hole score of 3-under par 24. Finishing in a second-place tie at 1-over par were Honeycutt, Wes Jones, Thomas Kelly, and Jeremy Yancey.
The club also recently announced that its couple golf outings started this past week and will run every other Thursday through Sept. 17.

Marion residents claim local 5K titles
Wesley Gurley, 43, and Shelby Gurley, 31, both of Marion, claimed the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, at the Running For Restoration 5K in Valdese on April 4.
The Gurley duo completed the course, which started at McGalliard Falls Park and continued along the Valdese Greenway, in times of 18:52 and 19:05, beating each of the day’s other 29 runners to the finish line by at least 40-plus seconds.
James Gouge of Marion was third overall, followed in order by Matt McDaniel of Nebo and Landon Ray of Morganton, the only Burke County runner to finish in the top five.
The race mission is to raise awareness for the humane treatment of incarcerated people in North Carolina.
New Day Crossover Camp back in July
New Day Christian Church’s 19th annual Crossover Camp for rising third- through eighth-grade basketball players will be held July 7-10 daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church gym.
Instruction at the camp includes basketball fundamentals, leadership skills, and character development, and the camp coaching staff will include current and former high school and college basketball players from the area.

L-R to host NCHSAA lax championships
The NCHSAA last week announced the venues for its 2026 spring sports championship events, and Lenoir-Rhyne University is set to host lacrosse for the first time ever.
L-R’s Moretz Stadium hosts the state championship contests on May 29 at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8 p.m., as well as May 30 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will mark the third straight sports season this school year that L-R hosts major postseason action after hosting two state football title games in the fall for the first time before hosting the West Regional finals in basketball this past winter.
Other NCHSAA spring championship sites include: Burlington Athletic Stadium and North Main Athletic Complex (baseball, May 27-30); Duke and UNC Greensboro (softball, May 27-30); Durham County Memorial Stadium (girls soccer, May 28-30); Cary Tennis Park, North Main Athletic Complex, Burlington Tennis Center, and Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center (boys tennis, May 8-9 and 15-16); Longleaf Golf and Family Club, Gates Four Golf and Country Club, Sapona Golf Club, and Pinehurst No. 8 (boys golf, May 11-12); and Marcus T. Johnson Track at North Carolina A&T University (track and field, May 13-16).
