The Waldensian Festival offered activities for kids, including water activities to keep cool.
For half a century, the people of Valdese, many of them direct descendants of the Waldensian immigrants who settled the Burke County valley in 1893, have hosted the annual Waldensian Festival, celebrating the “Glorious Return,” a 1689 battle when 900 Waldensian men reclaimed their homeland in the Italian Cottian Alps after enduring years of religious persecution and exile.
Last weekend marked the 50th anniversary of the celebration, which included music, attraction tours, the historical outdoor drama “From This Day Forward,” a regional bocce tournament, an open art competition, food, a car show, a footrace, street vendors, and amusement rides.
