Western Piedmont Community College will graduate its first Scholar of Global Distinction on Thursday.
Melissa Lopez Mejia earned an associate in arts degree, and this special honor required completion of additional requirements. Mejia completed 15 credit hours of globally intensive courses and participated in the College’s World View Club. In addition, she completed international activities, a virtual Global 360 Cultural Studies course, and delivered a capstone presentation about her experiences and insights on April 28.
Western Piedmont Community Colleges partners with World View, a public service program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to offer the Scholar of Global Distinction program. World View equips K-12 and community college educators with global knowledge, best practices, and resources to prepare students to engage in our interconnected and diverse world.
The program is designed to give students a greater awareness of other cultures and development of intercultural competency. The goal is to prepare the student for successful participation in an interconnected world.
This honor means Mejia now has a resume-building credential that set her apart on college applications and in the job market. She also has access to the resources of UNC World View at UNC-Chapel Hill and to participate in affordable student-travel opportunities.
