The temperature on Monday evening at 7:15: A chilly 37 degrees.
The wind: 10 to 12 mph from the north, the same direction from which Santa Claus will come.
The spirit of the gathered crowd: Festive and happy, ready to count down the seconds until the large Christmas tree in the Downtown Drexel Park came to light and came to life.
More than 100 people waited in the early December night, some drinking hot cider provided by the Grow With Drexel group.
And then Drexel Town Manager Bill Carroll began the countdown ... “Ten, nine, eight.”
At the word “One” the tree’s hundreds of lights sparkled like diamonds, a herald of the oncoming Christmas season.
Shortly after the tree’s lighting, the Drexel Elementary School chorus entertained the crowd with several holiday tunes.
Drexel’s next holiday events: The annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m., followed by Christmas on Main — a celebration of the holiday season featuring vendors, food, crafts, kids’ activities, and even a chance to talk to Santa.
