PICTURE BURKE PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Members gather at the entrance of Morning Star Baptist Church, circa 1970s. Pictured (from left) in the front are Odie Thomas Carpenter (1905-1994), Eula Thomas Owens (1896-1983), and Gladys Thomas Henry (1914-1997). Standing in the back are Thomas C. Thomas (1899-1990) and Zelma Thomas Pearson (1917-2005). Established in 1909, the church is located on Morningstar Church Road in the Dry Ponds area of eastern Burke County in the community historically known as Thomas Town. Reverend Tench H. Thomas served as the first pastor. The original structure was replaced with the current building in 1945. Regular worship services ended in the late 1950s, but family members still maintain the building, cemetery, and grounds for reunions, funerals, and special services. This image was submitted by Ola Caldwell to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the N.C. Room of the Burke County Public Library.
