The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently announced a cooperative effort with Morganton and Burke County to commemorate a Revolutionary War event critical to our victory over the British.
At their December meeting, Regent Pat Wells said the chapter has been awarded a National Society DAR America 250! Patriot Marker Grant.
She added, “A partnership between the chapter, the City of Morganton, and Burke County has enabled the chapter to purchase the marker from Classic Bronze Resources of Cincinnati. The marker will be installed and dedicated next spring at Greenlee Crossing, Catawba Greenway Park, Morganton.”
Total cost of the marker was $5,555.00.
Greenlee Crossing is the site where, on Oct. 1, 1780, as many as 1,400 Patriot militia and those Patriots who accompanied them crossed the Catawba River.
They were on their way from their encampment at Colonel Charles McDowell's homestead, Quaker Meadows, to the Battle of King's Mountain. There, they defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his army of British and Loyalists.
Both Hugh Sandoe, representing Burke County, and Sally Sandy, Morganton City Manager, spoke at the December DAR meeting. Sandy described the location of Greenlee Crossing as a sacred site.
Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR, is fortunate to be joined in the celebration and preservation of our local history by our city and county leaders, and the Colonel Alexander Erwin Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, The Historic Burke Foundation, The History Museum of Burke County, and the Overmountain Men.
The NSDAR was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.With more than a million members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations.
