Frank Allen Ballew was born in Knoxville, Tenn., on Jan. 1, 1921. The son of the late Frank Alonzo and Gertrude Walker Ballew, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters before coming to Morganton in 1947 to work as chief engineer and announcer at WMNC radio station. Ballew’s voice became familiar to many Burke County listeners as he worked as an on-air announcer for decades at WMNC, and he was also active in the Optimist Club, serving as its president and holding other offices over a period of several years. He was married to Mildred Miller Ballew for 70 years before dying at age 95 on Aug. 16, 2016. This image was created by Greene Studio and submitted by the History Museum of Burke County and the N.C.
