For 50 years, the town of Valdese has commemorated a 17th-century triumph that happened half a world away. Next weekend, residents of the town will transform their charming Main Street into a vibrant celebration of Waldensian heritage.
The annual Waldensian Festival celebrates the “Glorious Return,” a 1689 battle when 900 Waldensian men reclaimed their homeland in the Italian Cottian Alps after enduring years of religious persecution and exile. Every year, the victory is remembered in Waldensian communities around the world on the second weekend in August.
For half a century, the people of Valdese, many of them direct descendants of the Waldensian immigrants who settled the Burke County valley in 1893, have celebrated the historical triumph with a weekend-long event. This year, the 50th annual Waldensian Festival will take place on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8 and 9 in downtown Valdese.
Heritage is at the forefront of the celebration as the town hosts live music, attraction tours, the historical outdoor drama “From This Day Forward,” a regional bocce tournament, an open art competition, food, a car show, a footrace, street vendors, and amusement rides.
Mark your calendars and make plans to visit Valdese for the 2025 Waldensian Festival.
