CoMMA Performing Arts Center is adding a new series aimed at young audiences and families.
The FamilyStage Series: Wiggles & Giggles are Welcome will include four shows during the upcoming season. The series was developed after CoMMA staff attended a youth and family showcase event and saw several acts geared toward younger audiences.
“There is so much amazing talent out there and we knew we needed to create something for the younger generation,” said Amber Austin, events manager at CoMMA.
Austin said CoMMA’s summer theater camp for youth has helped build interest in theater arts.
“These children are our future audience, so we want to introduce them to theatre at a young age,” Austin said. “There is a big need that we see for the younger generation, and we are so excited to offer the FamilyStage Series in this upcoming year’s show lineup.”
The series will open with “Donna Washington: Fun, Foolery & Folktales” at 11 a.m. on Aug. 1.
Washington is an award-winning, internationally known storyteller, artist-educator, and author who has performed for audiences of all ages for more than 36 years. Her program may include stories about the North Wind, an exasperated turtle, why Possum plays dead, or why the Sun and Moon live in the sky.
Each FamilyStage show is designed with younger audiences in mind and welcomes “wiggles and giggles.” Tickets are $13 plus tax for each event.
CoMMA also will offer three theater technology workshops this summer for rising ninth through 12th graders. Each workshop will run from 9-11 a.m. and costs $25. Registration is available at commaonline.org on the events page. Each workshop is limited to 16 participants.
The first workshop, Stagecraft: Set Design Concepts, will be held Monday, July 20. It will cover stage directions, stage safety, design concepts, and hardware. Participants also will draw and build small set pieces. No tools are required.
Participants who complete all three workshops will have an opportunity to apply for an internship assisting backstage with CoMMA’s 2026-27 FamilyStage productions.
