MADISON LIPE / THE PAPERAuthorities have issued nine warrants for worthless check against the former owner of Morganton’s Subway restaurants following an investigation into unpaid wages. Additional charges could be pending.
Investigators identified the owner as William Albert Parrish, of 301 Louise Avenue in Valdese. When first contacted, last week, Parrish told investigators a resolution was in place and that employees would be paid by Thursday, July 17. Investigators followed up and found that no wages had been paid.
"Investigators contacted Parrish again and discovered that no resolution was reached and employees had still not been paid," according to a statement from Morganton Department of Public Safety. "Warrants have been issued for nine counts of worthless check and there are more charges pending."
The Morganton Department of Public Safety said it began receiving reports in early July from Subway employees who claimed they had not been paid. The department’s Criminal Investigations Division determined that payroll checks issued to some employees bounced due to insufficient funds.
The stores involved — located at 100 E. Fleming Drive, 107 Independence Boulevard, and 1255-A Burkemont Avenue, Space 22 — all closed in late June.
Subway’s corporate office confirmed that Parrish is no longer affiliated with the company and does not operate any Subway restaurants, according to published reports.
Public Safety is asking anyone with information about the case to contact 828-509-3653.
