A new scam is permeating the lives of inmate’s family members in Burke County and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) wants residents to be aware.
In this scam, people posing as law enforcement and jail staff call inmates’ family members seeking payment for bail, fines, fees, and ankle-monitor costs.
The BCSO reiterated that jail staff will not call to request or collect bail money, the Burke County Jail doesn’t collect fines or fees from inmates upon release, and there is not an ankle monitoring program operated in the Burke County Jail.
To counteract the scam, the BCSO requested people connect directly with bail agents using publicly listed phone numbers that can be located in the Burke County Jail lobby.
Furthermore, if you receive a scam call, avoid providing personal or financial information, end the call, and contact the Burke County Jail at (828)764-9578 to report. While reporting, provide any details possible, including the phone number used and what information the scammer requested.
