Mailing a letter from Burke County could soon cost a little more under a proposed U.S. Postal Service rate increase set to take effect this summer.
The Postal Service announced it has filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission to raise the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 78 cents to 82 cents, a 4-cent increase. The new rates would take effect July 12, pending federal approval.
Overall, the proposed changes would increase mailing service prices by about 4.8%, according to USPS.
The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters would remain unchanged at 29 cents, but the Postal Service is also seeking adjustments for other products, including periodicals, marketing mail, package services and select special services.
Postal officials said the increase is part of an effort to address ongoing financial challenges and rising operational costs while maintaining universal service.
The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage and services to fund its operations, according to the agency.
If approved, the new rates would apply nationwide, including to customers in Burke County who rely on the Postal Service for personal and business mail.
The Postal Regulatory Commission is expected to review the proposal before issuing a final decision.
